A groundbreaking ceremony for the Columbia bypass project was held today at 9 a.m. at Cedar and Second streets in Columbia.

State, county and local officials, including Columbia Mayor Leo Lutz, Borough Manager Sam Sukolsky, Former Borough Manager Norm Meiskey, State Representative Dave Hickernell, State Senator Mike Brubaker and others, spoke at the ceremony.

When completed, the bypass will reroute heavy truck traffic along the borough’s perimeter. Currently, trucks travel along Route 441 through Third Street and down Locust Street, essentially cutting though the center of town.
The total cost of the project is almost $20.4 million, according to PennDOT spokesman Greg Penny.

  1. The TH Experience has no peek roof. The blue prints show a peek roof. Some one took the money!! This has been going on for some time in this town. Just like the High school had left over materials and some one took it also. This town is soooo corrupt it STINKS!!!

  2. Columbia Borough did not pay for the build of the Turkey Hill Experience. And I don't think Columbia Borough is footing the 20 million for the new highway either.

  3. The Borough was instrumental in making it happen using millions of dollars of grant money and with huge discounts for for the developer on school taxes. Sheetz wanted the property and would have paid the school taxes. Hands down, it was a terribly bad decision for the community. And where are all of the down town improvements that the CEDC promised to make from their commission on the sale of the property to their developer friend ?

  4. a good start would be to simply look back at public record to see how much commission the CEDC got on the sale of the land to the developer, and ask why they didn't do as they promised and use it to improve the down town ? Maybe they were too busy helping to facilitate the sale of prime riverfront cottage land.
